Dialects are an important part of local culture. They carry historical memory, everyday customs, and collective knowledge. However, with rapid urbanization, dialects are gradually disappearing from daily communication and are facing the risk of extinction.

This project takes a future-oriented perspective and treats the disappearance of dialects as an ongoing cultural break. It imagines a scenario where dialects have already “disappeared,” in order to reflect on the process of language loss and build a digital system that responds to the urgency of cultural preservation. The design uses the “black hole” as a core metaphor, representing the cultural gap and irreversible loss left by the disappearance of dialects. This concept is translated into a basic grid system for type design. Based on Zhao Yuanren’s “five-level tone notation system,” the tonal features of dialects are converted into five visual parameters: Tone, Pitch, Length, Timbre, and Speed, which together control the variation and generation of the typeface.

Through this system, text is no longer just a tool for communication, but a coded and adjustable visual system, allowing dialects to be preserved and continued in a digital form.
